Recent Events Following are some recent events within the Trinity Community. Workshop: Safeguarding God's Children Kathey Crowe, who has been certified by the National Church, will provide this training on Sunday, April 20th, from 5:00 to 8:00. In addition to those who work directly with our children, the National Church encourages all members of the congregation to attend this training to create a general awareness of unwanted predators, inappropriate behavior and to ensure that safety is the highest priority and a way of life within the community. If you would like to participate, please e-mail the Church Office or call 408-293-7953. THE GLORY OF BEETHOVEN’S NINTH The Winchester Orchestra, under music director Henry Mollicone, presents Beethoven’s masterpiece, the Ninth Symphony, with the San Jose Symphonic Choir, Leroy Kromm, director. Soloists are soprano Sandra Rubalcava, mezzo Debra Lambert, tenor Adam Flowers and baritone Michael Morris. Also on the program is the Turkish March from The Ruins of Athens. Sunday, March 16, 7:00 p.m. Tickets: Adults = $18; Seniors = $12; Students = $7; Children under 12 = free. (408) 866-5302. Email: winchester@pacbell.net. Online: www.geocities.com/winchesterorchestra On Monday, February 18 at 2pm, the Trinity Bell Ringers will be performing a concert of sacred, patriotic and folk music in honor of President's Day. You will also experience San Jose's newest art project in downtown San Jose featuring Trinity's historic bells. San Jose commissioned Bill Fontana, a world known sound sculptor from San Francisco, to create a work of art, Sonic Cascades, in downtown San Jose. Bill chose the Trinity Bells as the source of sound for Sonic Cascades and the result is magnificent. Bring your lawn chairs and sit in St James Park across from the Cathedral. To get the full impact of the art project, stroll up and down 2nd Street during the concert and let the glorious sound of the bells wash over you as it rolls up and down the street. If the weather is too cold or rainy, you can sit in the Cathedral and hear the bells through the speaker system. After the concert the bell ringers will open the bell tower for those who would like a tour of the bell playing chamber and console. We hope to see you at the concert. Bishop Seated at Trinity Cathedral On Saturday, January 12th, 2008 at 4:00 P.M., Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves was officially welcomed and seated at Trinity Cathedral during an Evensong service. She is the third bishop of the Diocese of El Camino Real. Joining the Cathedral staff and clergy of the diocese were a number of dignitaries, including San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed, City Councilman Sam Liccardo, City Attorney Rick Doyle, and Bishop Patrick J. McGrath of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose. To begin the service, Bishop Mary knocked three times on the closed doors of the Cathedral. She was admitted and welcomed by the wardens and clergy, and processed to the sounds of organ and brass. She was then installed by Dean David Bird, taking her seat in the cathedra, or Bishop's chair. Mayor Reed welcomed Bishop Mary to San Jose on behalf of the city. Later in the Service, Bishop Mary addressed the congregation, discussing the role of cathedrals in cities. Finally, the Bishop, accompanied by Mayor Reed, blessed the city of San Jose from the steps of Trinity Cathedral. See also:
Lunch for People Who are Homeless In a show of Christmas spirit, the December lunch was very well supported by 21 regular and returning volunteers. We tried a new recipe on the lunchers today, a meat sauce and noodle casserole. Spicy garlic bread, green salad, along with milk, juice, assorted fresh fruit and finished with a variety of pies, a cheesecake, and M&M-topped ice cream sundaes rounded out the meal. The hot lunch was a good remedy to the sunny but very chilly Saturday weather. Altogether, we served a group of about 90 coming from both the Julian Street Inn and Cecil White Center. Many thanks to Leslie Barr, who planned this month’s meal and to Sandy Sobie, who did all the shopping. Thanks to returning volunteer, Bill Steigelmann, who with Roger Lobbes, and Graciela Velazquez, slaved over the hot stove to create the tasty meat sauce and to cook the pasta. Thanks also to Selena and Marissa Godoy, who brought mom, Lupe, and friend, Tony Trejo, for organizing the garlic bread (which came out spicy and delicious) making team, which also included Edna Barrow and Joyce Baker. The salad making was in the hands of, Rick Hawes, who also deserves thanks for bringing the veggies that always makes our salad a special treat, JoAnn Freda, David Anthony, and friend of the parish, Bill Henry. Also helping with the salad was Jenny Lee who brought fellow student, Kai Kim. They all did a great job cleaning, cutting, and mixing veggies for the salad. Young Min Seo deserves a big thanks for washing the pots, pans and utensils. They were really spotless under her uncompromising standards! After the meal prep, ten continued on to serve at Cecil White Center. Thanks for their effort but the even better reward was the round of applause from the appreciative lunchers. Also thanks very much to Karen Gillette, Susan Parks, and Rita Welsh for driving in to check that we had plenty of help. They were able to leave knowing that we had enough volunteers to make and serve the meal. Once again, thanks to the Lucky supermarket at the intersection of Saratoga and Pruneridge Avenues in Santa Clara, to managers, Andrew and Greg, and to bakers Bertha, Ernie, Amina, and Sandy, for their donation of baked goods. Thanks to friend of the parish, Ben White, for coordinating the bakery donation with Lucky. The next lunch will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2008. At least 10 volunteers are needed for this local mission activity so if your schedule allows please consider coming and helping. We meet to prepare lunch at 10:30 am in the kitchen of the Great Hall. No experience is required, just a desire to help those less fortunate than ourselves. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall. If you have any questions, please ask any of the volunteers or Fr. Bird.
