Trinity Supports the Sox Project during Lent

Organized by THE SCHOOL FOR DEACONS, the Sox (Socks) Project is an annual Ingathering of new pairs of white socks that are distributed to homeless people.

Life on the street means life on your feet. Imagine constantly standing and walking, shoes that may not fit well, rain-soaked feet.  These realities make clean socks an essential element of homeless healthcare.  So often, we feel that we cannot make a difference in a problem as significant as homelessness.

But we can make a difference, one person at a time, through a simple gift of a pair of clean, white socks.

Throughout the season of Lent, new pairs of white socks for men or women can be dropped in the SOX PROJECT BOX on Sunday mornings during Lent.

Trinity Inaugurates Second Feeding Program

Trinity Cathedral has recently expanded its outreach ministries by doubling its feeding program.  In addition to the monthly meal for the homeless in downtown San Jose (which has been running for more than 15 years), Trintiy volunteers now cooking and serving meals at the San Jose Family Shelter.  Following is a report on the first meal.

We had a great turnout to kickoff our new effort to eradicate hunger in our city by cooking and serving lunch at San Jose Family Shelter on the 16th of January. Twenty four individuals helped either wash, prepare, and/or serve meals to families living at this shelter.

First let me thank Sara Calkins for the outstanding p.r. effort she waged in the monthly parish newsletter.  Thank you to Erin McCauley who did the shopping, Bill and Rafael who donate oranges from their tree. Thank you to Daphne Pigott who did much for the washing and cleaning. Thank you to Ben White for collecting the French bread and sweets from Lucky's market.

Since this was my first time to coordinate an effort such as this I was very glad that many of the "usual suspects" turned up to help. Roger Lobbes, all three Fongs, Ben White, Susan Parks, David Anthony, Ira Cohen, Jose Barroso, Erin McCauley and her friend Mary Kelly. Matt Bigler brought his father John who was in town on a visit. John McCurry brought Annette Brennan and her daughter Christine. Kathy Goldbach, Renee Palmonari, Karl Inderbitzin, and Gerald Li who brought his daughter Merissa. Barbara Robinson and her husband joined us for the first time and did a great job frying meat and assisting in the preparation of the sauce. Ben Brookshire, Kimberly, Michelle, and Alan Fong joined us at the shelter to help serve.

We put the new large cooking pot to good use . Karen purchased a large container with lid for mixing, transporting, and serving the salad. She also got some pastry brushes to aid in the preparation of the garlic French bread and two new cutting boards.

I hope that I have not forgotten anyone who contributed to making this outreach activity a great success. If I have, please forgive me. The congregation as a whole is to be thanked for supporting this activity with a budget to purchase food and drink.

We had a great time of fellowship so I hope that you will consider joining us next month on the third Saturday at 9:45 a.m. in the Parish Kitchen.
